Kyphoplasty & Vertebroplasty
Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty are minimally invasive procedures that treat spinal compression fractures. Spinal compression fractures typically happen when the spinal vertebrae have weakened due to osteoporosis. The goal of these procedures is to stabilize the vertebra and alleviate the pain.
Kyphoplasty
During a kyphoplasty procedure, your surgeon will make a small incision in your back. Using image guidance the surgeon will insert a balloon to open the cavity. The cavity will then be filled with bone cement to create an internal cast inside of the fracture.
Vertebroplasty
The vertebroplasty procedure is very similar to the kyphoplasty procedure except instead of inserting a balloon, the surgeon will insert the bone cement through a hollow needle.
Both procedures are minimally invasive and most patients can go home the same day.
